Why is there a Jaguar in our logo?

We get it… “Why the Jaguar? What’s the connection?”

A photo of Manuel Marcial with a thought bubble of the jaguar in the emeralds international logo and a question mark.

So, we asked Manuel to explain:

“The recounting of the majesty of the Colombian jaguar or “Tigre” as he is known in that country, has a divine thrust which has made that animal part of the historical harmony of both the religious and sectarian in Colombian thought, at least for those who are familiar with its history. Emeralds, in their natural formation as part of the tectonic upliftment of the Andes mountains occur in veins that are very hidden and narrow. Overcoming the difficulties of very lush jungles and vertical real estate is made even more difficult by the unique feature, unseen anywhere else on the planet, of the very real fact that the Creator removed the fear of man from the heart of the jaguar in order that that powerful cat become the protector of the emerald, and with its sharp teeth and slashing claws not allow humans to easily violate his domain as they search for emeralds.

Once, as I was on one of the mountain trails, my horse suddenly became very nervous and almost uncontrollable with the reins. It was then that I heard a loud throaty growl come out of the dense jungle on my left and I knew I was in the territory of the fearsome jaguar and had to proceed in utter and absolute caution so as not to encourage an attack by that fearsome and majestic creature. My concern was well enabled as horse and I proceeded away from the jaguar’s domain and we lived yet another day. Even though I had my Luger at the ready, I was uncertain about how effective I might be in terminating his onslaught. Better to just head on away.  This was just one of the many perils attached to the search for emeralds. Ergo, in consideration of these life endangering risks I would always put the highest price I could get for them in justification of those dangers be they from man or beast.”

Emeralds and Conch Pearls

From independent mining on horseback in the Andes mountains in search of the rare emerald to diving the waters of the Caribbean in search of it’s treasures including the extremely rare conch pearl, a business legacy began to develop over 64 years and continues to this day specializing in these two beautiful works of art that mother nature hides and guards closely. Both the mountains and the ocean have provided incredible adventure and opportunity as well as inspiration for the adventurer and entrepreneur that our founder Manuel J. Marcial is, and we celebrate those inspirations and opportunities by putting a spotlight on the Jaguar and why it exists in our company logo.

Name the Jaguar

In June of 2022 we had a giveaway with the purpose of giving an honorable name to this beautiful and legendary creature that has left an unforgettable mark in the mind of many including our founder. The top 5 names were selected and out of those five a winner was personally chosen by Manuel and announced. As you can see in the image below, our jaguar is now named Yagu!
