What inspires a Marcial de Gomar Design?
The founder of Emeralds International, Manuel J. Marcial, is a self-taught jewelry designer who, after his days of emerald mining and exporting emeralds from Bogota around the world, created a unique jewelry specialty store in emeralds and conch pearls, and, along with it, unique designs incorporating the gems that he is so passionate about (i.e. rough and cut emeralds and conch pearls, with the occasional diamond accent). His designs are a reflection of his passion and appreciation for the many divine attributes reflected in nature and the beauty that is inherent in creation. One of the wonderful and spiritual qualities found in nature is reflected in the harmonious relationship of the diverse elements. This phenomena of ‘unity in diversity’, of shape, form and color, is a prime motivating influence for a Marcial de Gomar design. Another influencing factor in a Marcial de Gomar design is harmonizing geometric shapes with freeform patterns – a ‘resolution of opposites’ so to say, where a balance is found that allows the diverse elements and shapes to work together. Much like the diversity of the human race, the flowers of one garden, although different shapes and colors, function and dwell together in harmony to create a final beautiful result that is more than the sum total of its parts and ultimately a reflection of the source of Creation.
No two finished Marcial de Gomar pieces are the same when working with these gemstones of natural irregular form. Once these designs come off the bench they tend to go fast, and this was the case for the most recent emerald and conch pearl sea-fan ring featured in this video highlighting why designs by Marcial de Gomar are so special, as told by Manuel Marcial himself, and his son-in-law, and protege Carl Schutze:
Where does the name ‘Marcial de Gomar’ originate?
The name Marcial de Gomar comes from combining the last name of Manuel’s maternal heritage, dating back to the Spanish nation of Al-Andalus, from the Arabic ‘Qumar’ or ‘Gomar’ which is seen as equal to, if not more important than, the paternal side. The ‘q’ has a soft ‘g’ sound and the unaccented u is like an ‘o’. Along with the paternal side of his family tracing back to the Roman empire and the poet ‘Martial’, now in modern Spanish, spelled Marcial.
